Peterborough – Ashlee Aiken, General Manager of Kawartha Food Share, announced today that Kawartha Food Share will again host a county-wide food drive over the month of June to support food banks in North Kawartha, Havelock, Bridgenorth, Lakefield and Trent Lakes.

“We are thrilled to be able to host another round of food drives for our county member agencies. This year has been especially difficult for food banks as we have seen an increase in clients throughout the pandemic. Donations tend to decrease during the summer months, so we are excited at the opportunity to lend a hand and help ensure our agencies shelves are well stocked. We can’t thank MPP Dave Smith and his team enough for their continued support and assisting at each food drive again this go around!” Ashlee Aiken said.

She has enlisted the support of MPP Dave Smith, who led the on-the-ground effort for their last Peterborough County campaign, the Winter is Coming Food Drive. The Winter is Coming Food Drive raised almost $40,000 worth of cash donations and foodstuffs in November of 2020.

“Every opportunity to support our townships is an opportunity that can’t be passed up,” MPP Dave Smith said. “COVID-19 has placed tremendous stress on the support system in our rural communities; these food banks support many families and it is critical these supports remain strong,” MPP Smith added.

MPP Smith will again be leading the effort by hosting food drives at local grocery stores in each of the townships. A special drive will be held at Morello’s Your Independent Grocers in Peterborough to support the Apsley food bank, who has lost their community’s only grocery store in a fire late last year.

“On behalf of Apsley and North Kawartha, I want to thank Morello’s Your Independent Grocer for hosting a special food drive to support our local Foodbank. Not having Sayer’s Foods to host our own food drive right now is very hard,” said North Kawartha Mayor Carolyn Amyotte. “As many know, North Kawartha lost it’s only grocery store to a fire last December. MPP Smith and I were at Sayer’s the week before the fire hosting his Winter is Coming Food Drive. MPP Smith has been unwavering in his support and commitment to the residents of our community, and I am very grateful,” Mayor Amyotte added.

“I strongly recommend that county residents support MPP Smith’s Food Drive. There are times when we have to step up to help our neighbours. This is one of them. I thank Dave for taking this initiative,” Peterborough County Warden said.

“Please join us at Morello’s Your Independent Grocers, Lansdowne St East, on June 4th, to assist in providing food and basic hygiene products to persons in need living within the boundaries of North Kawartha Township,” said Dave Morello, Owner of Morello’s Your Independent Grocers.
